Science & Technology - Introduction

The United Kingdom believes science and innovation plays a vital role in determining the quality of life of all citizens and driving economic prosperity. In recognition, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) maintains a dedicated Science and Innovation Network to manage and support almost 40 science and innovation sections in British Embassies and High Commissions in 20 countries.

The Network reports to a wide customer base and works with a range of UK organisations, including government departments, parliamentary bodies, research councils, British Council, learned societies, industry, universities and other public sector bodies.

The Science and Innovation Section of the British High Commission, Canberra is part of this Network.

Objectives of the Science and Innovation Section:

  • report to the FCO on Australian science policy and research developments in order to ensure that the UK government is well-informed
  • promote and encourage scientific collaboration with UK partners in order to ensure the transfer of scientific knowledge between the two countries
  • raise the profile of the strong UK science base and to promote the UK as dynamic, creative and the 'partner of choice' for international collaborations
  • work in partnership with UK Trade and Investment colleagues around Australia to promote inward scientific investment and trade to the UK
